- Dean Poling | The Valdosta Daily Times ‘The Boy Friend’ cast brings a 1920s musical spoof this week to Valdosta High School Performing Arts Center.
VALDOSTA — Sandy Wilson’s musical, “The Boy Friend,” transports Valdosta High School theatre students 90 years into the past to the Roaring 20s along the French Riviera.

Though one of the last three-act musicals, “The Boy Friend” is a more contemporary production than the early 20th century. It provides a musical parody and homage to the 1920s productions of Rodgers and Hart.
The show encompasses one afternoon as couples meet, fall for each other at first sight then realize they are destined to be together forever and ever, with plenty of musical interludes and some fun twists along the way.
Valdosta High School Theatre Arts Director Ricardo Ipina says his students have spent the past several weeks rehearsing for this week’s opening of “The Boy Friend.”
During a short break in dress rehearsal, a student approaches Ipina regarding one character’s conical hat obstructing views and blocking faces.
Another student discusses finding the right pair of shoes for his character.
Ipina then speaks with Valdosta High Band Director Michael Thomas, who leads “The Boy Friend’s” student orchestra. They discuss certain breaks in the music.
