VSU tennis teams fall in finals of conference tournament

The Valdosta State men’s and women’s tennis teams both lost to West Florida in the finals of the Gulf South Conference tournament on Sunday. The Argonauts took down the Blazers 5-1, while the West Florida women won 5-2.
The Valdosta State men fell behind after losing all three doubles matches. VSU’s Christian Hansen and Niklas Herbring fell to Bruno Savi and Kevin Ducros 9-8. Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk lost 8-6 to Leandro Ferreira and Andrey Pozhidaev. Konstantin Kutschenko and Nicola Kusy fell to Domenico Sano and Mike Lue 8-3.
In singles action, Kutschenko lost to Savi 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 2 singles match. Santiago Vidales lost by the same score to Ferreira.
One bright spot for the Blazers, however, was Hansen’s play. He made short work of Ducros in the top spot, 6-0, 6-3.
The VSU women started strong against the Argonauts, and held a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Sarah Braun and Alina Nagel beat Caitlyn Baines and Sheila Smiley 8-6 in the top spot, while Tina Trautmann and Maja Ehses took down Fernanda Amaral and Hannah Durham 8-3, in the bottom doubles spot.
West Florida’s Mariana and Luiza Sonnervig defeated Michelle Fischer and Juliana Boehm 8-6.
Then West Florida won four straight singles matches to earn the GSC title.
Valdosta State’s best chance came in the fifth spot, with Nagel facing Baines. Nagel won the first set 6-2, and pushed Baines in the second, but fell 7-5. In the third and deciding set, Baines ran away with it, 6-2.
Ehses and Trautmann both fell by the same score, 6-4, 6-1, in the third and fourth slots. Ehses lost to Luiza Sonnervig while Trautmann could not beat Smiley. In the No. 6 singles slot, Nicole Hernandez fell 6-0, 6-3 to Durham.
The Valdosta State tennis teams will know their fate for the postseason on Tuesday. The NCAA will air the postseason selection shows for men’s tennis at 8 p.m. and women’s tennis at 8:30 p.m. on www.ncaa.com.
