Lions lend a helping hand

The Live Oak Lions Club was contacted by District Governor 35-L, Pat Hall, offering to help local Lions participate in assisting the community and also in applying for a Lions International disaster grant for funds to use to assist local devastated citizens following the devastation of Tropical Storm Debby.
Treasurer David Mullis and Secretary Mark Stewart started some local contacting and Pat went to work immediately, and literally within hours of submitting the request she received good news, we were approved!
Then we had to decide how to best use the available funds. The area was receiving emergency relief from various agencies; food, temporary housing, hot meals, clothing, etc. So what was missing? When folks around the area were asked what was really in shortage, there seemed to be one answer given more often than others, baby diapers, wipes, formula and baby food.
So on the morning of July 17, Live oak Lion volunteers set up a distribution site in the parking lot provided by Love INC and along with District Governor Pat, issued several thousand dollars worth of those needed items to appreciative recipients. The activity was a success. At the end of the day over 60 parents/guardians were able to get some needed items for over 150 children.
Special thanks goes to the Live Oak Lion volunteers who took time away from their jobs and businesses to represent the club and help their community: Gerald Herring, Coy Howell, Ed Howell, Mike Johnson, David Mullis, Wyatt O’Neal, Clair Parker, Homer Scroggin and Mark Stewart.
