Harlem Globetrotter legend Michael “Memphis” Douglas along with the Harlem Legends returns to Live Oak on Saturday, Sept. 29. The Legends will take on five Suwannee Valley All Star Teams at the Suwannee County Coliseum to benefit the Girls and Boys Club of Suwannee County.

Even as a little boy Douglas desired to play basketball with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters, because of the inspiration they had given him.

The 51-year-old Douglas travels with the Harlem Legends, a group of professional athletes. The Harlem Legends consists of former players of the Harlem Globetrotters, NBA, NFL, past USA Olympians and other professionals. The Legends are part of the Michael Douglas Youth Foundation, which Douglas formed in 1991 to provide activities for America’s youth that are fun, educational and offer a model of healthy living.

According  to Douglas, the Harlem Legends visit schools and help children while striving to be positive role models.

“Children have to be encouraged from an early age and we must help build a foundation by showing them what they can do by doing the right thing,” Douglas insists.

Douglas recognizes that there are many careers associated with sports and other wholesome things children love and he remains adamant about encouraging them to achieve their goals.

The Harlem Legends also offer fun, family entertainment for all ages, Douglas promises.

While the Harlem Legends perform in about 30 shows per year, Douglas makes over 100 annual appearances. In addition to celebrity basketball games, the Legends present youth basketball camps and clinics throughout the year. Douglas also stays busy fulfilling speaking engagements as a motivational speaker.

The game to benefit the Girls & Boys Club between the Harlem Legends and Suwannee County All Stars was originally set for early August, but will now take place on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m. in the Coliseum on 11th Street.

All pre-sold tickets bearing the Aug. 4, 2012 date will still be honored at the door.
