Kennesaw State officially announced its first-ever football coach Sunday afternoon, and Valdosta State’s David Dean was not the man tabbed to start the new Division I program.

Rumored as an early candidate for the position, Dean’s name was dropped from much of the talks and media reports the last three to four weeks, and longtime Georgia Tech assistant Brian Bohannon was said to be the choice made by KSU athletic director  Vaughn Williams, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Turns out, Bohannon was exactly Williams’ choice, as announced on Sunday.

“This is an extremely exciting moment in Kennesaw State University history,” Williams said. “Coach Bohannon embodies every value, characteristic and skill set that we look for when choosing head coaches to lead our student-athletes. Brian has distinguished himself as a servant leader who will build a program the right way.”

It is unclear if Dean ever interviewed at Kennesaw State, which will begin playing football games at the Division I level in the fall of 2015.

When asked about the rumors regarding the job opening during VSU’s spring practice earlier this month, Dean reiterated that he was the coach at Valdosta State and had not met with KSU school officials.

“I have not interviewed. I have not done anything at Kennesaw State,” Dean said. “It is all rumors. Anytime a job comes open there are always people that say this guy is going to get it or that guy. I can tell you this, I haven’t been up there, I haven’t been on campus, I haven’t talked with the (athletic director).

Bohannon has plenty of Division I coaching experience, compared to Dean, who has coached primarily coached on the Division II level.

Bohannon spent the past five seasons as the quarterbacks coach at Georgia Tech, under head coach Paul Johnson. Prior to that, he was the wide receivers coach at Navy and Georgia Southern, also under Johnson.

Dean, who was named the 2007 and 2012 American Football Coaches’ Association Division II Coach of the Year after leading the Blazers to national championship victories, was rumored to be a candidate because of his success at the Division II level, and due to his strong connections to Division I coaches such as Kirby Smart — Alabama’s defensive coordinator — and Will Muschamp — Florida’s head coach.

Dean will remain the head coach at Valdosta State, which opens its 2013 season Sept. 7 at Fort Valley State. Dean is expected to announce the hiring of a new quarterbacks coach sometime this upcoming week.
