Earl Chambers’ time at Valdosta State has come to an end.

The Blazers’ defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator informed his players Wednesday that he has taken a coaching position at Division I-FCS James Madison University, according to multiple sources.

At James Madison, which is located in Harrisonburg, Va., Chambers will serve as the team’s tight ends coach, reports FootballScoop.com.

The move to James Madison reunites Chambers with Mickey Matthews, his former coach at the University of Georgia in the late 1990s. Matthews is now the head coach at James Madison.

Chambers joined the Valdosta State coaching staff in 2005 and has served as the defensive line coach since joining the staff. Chambers helped coach the Blazers to five playoff appearances and a pair of national championships (2007, 2012) in his eight seasons with the team.

The move for Chambers isn’t unexpected.

It was just in February that the coach confirmed to The Valdosta Daily Times that he interviewed at Georgia Southern for a coaching vacancy. The position was filled and Chambers remained on staff at Valdosta State through spring practice.

Valdosta State head coach David Dean was unavailable for comment, despite repeated attempts by The Valdosta Daily Times.

When will Chambers’ position be filled? That is unclear, although the position will surely garner some up-and-coming coaches.

One possible candidate to fill the position is VSU graduate assistant Doug Belk, who has spent the last two seasons assisting with the defensive backs.

Belk, a former quarterback at Lowndes High School and Carson-Newman College, is widely respected throughout the Valdosta State coaching community, having played an integral part in the Blazers’ game planning for their playoff game against Carson-Newman this past season.
