Cade Medley limited Valdosta State to just four hits, and led North Alabama to a 6-0 win over the Blazers on Sunday afternoon in Gulf South Conference baseball action at Mike Lane Field.
North Alabama (22-17-1, 12-9 in the GSC) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Jake Ward led off with a double and scored on a Josh Cyr single.
The Lions upped their lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning. Cyr singled and eventually scored on an error. North Alabama added another run in the seventh on Bradley Noland’s RBI double.
The Lions then scored three more times in the eighth inning to up their lead to 6-0. Matthew Tittle hit a two-run single, and Josh Carpenter followed with a single that scored another run.
Medley, who improved to 5-1, allowed a lead-off single to Nick Rodda to open the game, but did not allow another base runner until Jake Fields singled with two outs in the fifth inning. Fields also singled in seventh inning, as did Michael Gouge, for the only VSU hits of the day.
Jeremy Holcomb pitched 5 1/3 innings for Valdosta State and surrendered seven hits and six walks to go along with two runs, and fell to 6-3.
Valdosta State returns home to Billy Grant Field on Tuesday to take on Thomas University, in a game that was rescheduled after a rainout earlier in the year. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
