Valdosta State blanked Christian Brothers 5-0 in the quarterfinals before falling 5-3 to West Alabama in the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Men’s Tennis Tournament Saturday.

VSU entered the CBU match with a 3-0 lead before the first serve of the match as the Bucs were forced to forfeit No. 3 doubles as well as No. 5 and No. 6 singles due to a shortage of players. The fifth-ranked doubles duo of Konstantin Kutschenko and Mario Navarro won 8-0 at No. 1 while Tammo Haake and Sebastin Jasyk won by the same score at No. 2 to close out the match.

West Alabama claimed an early lead as it won two of the three doubles points. Nestor Vargas and Luis Ruiz defeated Haake and Jasyk 8-2 at No. 2 while Anton Ivanov and Adam Drysdale upset Kutschenko and Navarro 8-5 at No. 1. Andrew Harvin and Joachim Schemm got VSU on the board with a 9-7 victory over Honorio Fernandez and Manuel Grossman at No. 3.

Simon Bardell gave UWA its third point with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Harvin at No. 6 singles while Schemm topped Ivanov 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2. Drysdale put the Tigers on the brink of victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Haake at No. 5 while seventh-ranked Kutschenko topped Vargas 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Ruiz closed out the match with a Jasyk with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4.
