Weil named GSC Pitcher of the Week

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State senior pitcher Benjamin Weil was named the Gulf South Conference Pitcher of the Week Tuesday in an announcement from the league office.

Weil earned the honor after picking up two wins and a save in VSU’s five games last week. The right-hander appeared in all five VSU games and pitched 7.0 innings total. He allowed just three hits and two walks, as well as no runs, and struck out seven batters on the week.

On the year, Weil now has a 4-2 record and four saves to go along with a 1.26 earned run average.

Weil currently leads the Gulf South Conference with 27 relief appearances on the week. He and the Blazers return to action Wednesday at 5 P.M. when they travel to Columbus to face Columbus State.

VSU baseball schedule changed for weekend series vs. Delta State

VALDOSTA — Valdosta State has announced a baseball schedule change for this weekend’s three game series versus Delta State.

Sunday’s game has been moved to Friday, with a start time of 5 p.m. The weekend series concludes on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.

VSU golf finishes fifth at GSC championship

TUNICA, Miss. — Valdosta State shot a final round 314 to finish fifth at the Gulf South Conference Championship Tuesday at the par 72, 7,037 yard Tunica National Golf Club.

The Blazers finished the tournament with a 49-over 913 for the three-round tournament.

West Florida won the event with a two-over 886 after shooting 307 in the final round while North Alabama, which tallied the low round of 298 in the final round, was second at 891.

Abdul Sihag paced VSU as he shot 76 on Tuesday to finish seven-over-par at 223 to tie for 11th while Nate Anderson (75) finished 14th at 225. John Fordham (80) was 18th at 229 while Clarke Hendrick (236) tied for 28th at 236. Drew McGuire (84) rounded out the team and finished 34th at 245.

Valdosta State awaits word as to its fate in search of a bid in the NCAA Regional Tournament, which will be played May 6, 7 and 8 at Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla.
