Old VFW flagpole to see new life

Published 1:04 pm Friday, May 24, 2013

Outreach Christian Soldiers (OCS) will be dedicating a hand made flagpole that once stood at the Live Oak VFW on 11th Street. The flagpole was donated to OCS by Levis Lawson. A brick fundraising project was used to build this monument to honor our veterans and their widows. The dedication will take place Saturday at 11 a.m. sharp at Live Oak Church of God at 9828 US 129 South in Live Oak.

We would like to thank all who gave and supported this project, as well as the support of the Live Oak Church of God in making this possible. Every church should have a flagpole.

The monument is a monument within a monument. The flagpole is a sign of patriotism past and rededicated new patriotism. The base is our military and veterans holding up the flag. Each engraved brick at this memorial represents our loved ones, some gave a little and some gave all. Each brick is a monument in itself. You’ll see 33 Army, six Marines, 11 Navy, eight United States Air Force, three United States Coast Guard, three paratroopers, seven killed in action and one from Ground Zero in New York. The small sidewalk at the entry is in memory of loved ones and families who support the In God We Trust way of life.

The plaque has the seal of each branch of our military. It states: Dedicated by OCS to our veterans May 2013. The three center bricks honor troops killed in action in Afghanistan in March of this year. The troops were from 3rd Infantry Div Air Calvary US Army. They were the crew members of our pastor’s son Jonathon Richie who is still deployed in Afghanistan.

Come and saulte this monument with us.
