Harris S. Greene Jr., 82, of Cook County, died Sunday, May 26, 2013, at his home. He was born on April 1, 1931, in Valdosta to the late Harris S. Sr. and Annie Mae Crumbley Greene.
Mr. Greene was a member of New Covenant Church and a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean Conflict aboard the USS Cunningham. Mr. Greene played guard for the Valdosta High School Wildcats under Coach Wright Bazemore. He was a building contractor, known for his gifted and talented innovative construction concepts. Mr. Greene was one of the first contractors to construct contemporary homes in the area and was recognized by the Lowndes Valdosta Historical Society for his preservation and restoration of the historical landmarks in Valdosta, including many homes on Patterson Street. Mr. Greene will be best remembered for his great gift of storytelling, his well-placed malapropisms and his self-deprecating humor.
Survivors include his wife, Jane Greene of Cook County; his children and their spouses, Scott Greene of Cook County, Cam and Kim Greene of Atlantic Beach, Fla., Paige and Corey Kearby of Peachtree City, Ga.; his grandchildren and spouses, Matt and Janelle Greene of Panama City, Fla., Jake and Julie Greene of Clemson, S.C., Kennedy Kearby, Cate Kearby and Caroline Kearby, all of Peachtree City; great-granddaughter, Samantha Greene of Panama City, Fla.; three sisters, Margaret Davis of Valdosta, Dorothy Stephenson of Waycross, Helen Sowell of Valdosta; sister-in-law, Ann Greene of Lake Park; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Larry Greene, Harry Greene and Jerry Greene.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 30, 2013, in the chapel of Carson McLane Funeral Home with Pastor Jimmy Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Futch Cemetery in Cook County. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. today at the Carson McLane Funeral Home.
