A rainstorm that came through Live Oak for about 30 minutes Tuesday afternoon felled several trees and large limbs.

“We’ve been here since 1965 and never had a storm like this,” said John Chambliss of CR 136.

Chambliss’ grandson Brad has a lawn care business and had just completed mowing, trimming and removing any branches and general maintenance of his grandfather’s multi-acre lawn, when the sky opened up.

“I had just taken a picture a few minutes before,” said Brad. “It happened in about 30 minutes. You could see the outside hanging plants. They were sideways.”

Chambliss even had a pine tree that was uprooted by the force of the storm. Luckily, it wasn’t too near the house. Remnants of the storm could be seen all over the earlier pristine property in the way of branches, piles of moss, and pine straw and cones.

“It’s quite a bit of work to clean up,” said Brad.

Just a couple of miles east on CR 136, Pepper’s Little Helpers childcare had a tree in the front lawn come down and strike part of the roof. There was no damage to the roof, but it gave everyone inside a bit of a scare.

Director and volunteer pre-K Katie Smith said she had already left for the day around 4 p.m. but got a call about it this morning.

“I’m guessing it was from all that wind. I’m not sure,” said Smith. “The kids heard a loud boom. They came last night to cut it off.”

She was referring to a lawn care business who came after the storm and sawed the downed tree into manageable sections and put it by the road for pick up.

A little further into town on Longleaf Drive, Glenda Taylor had a bit of a scare as well when a large branch from her neighbor’s tree came crashing down on her roof. This is the second time this has happened to her and the branch was from the same tree.

“This time it fell from a little further up,” said Taylor. “It sounded like a gunshot. It hit the middle of the house and rolled down.”

Taylor said there is again damage to her roof. The first time it happened about two years ago caused several thousand dollars worth of damage. She doesn’t think it will be as bad this time around.

“There is a water ring in the ceiling and a puncture in the roof,” said Taylor. “I was waiting on the insurance company adjuster. I thought you were them,” she laughed.
