The Fifth Annual Hudson Dockett Christmas Celebration took place Monday at the Robert L. Jenkins Community Center in Hudson Dockett, and while early morning saw poor weather conditions and constant rain, a sizable crowd still gathered to enjoy the memorable afternoon.
“This has been such a wonderful occasion,” Margie Guyton said. “I can’t explain the joy that I feel seeing the smiles and excitement of the children. This is what the holiday season is truly about.”
After a brief welcome and invocation by the Rev. Butler of Crossing Jordan Baptist Church, Valdosta, toys and books were given away to more than 160 children. The gifts were donated from numerous businesses and schools throughout the city.
“(The event) was a tremendous success,” Butler said. “This is such a blessing and I’m glad to be a part of it. I feel that this is only the beginning of things to come with this organization.”
Through her organization, Guyton has successfully coordinated programs and events solely intended to contribute to and improve the lives of others, and it is this mentality that pushes her on a daily basis. Aside from organizing community activities, Guyton also feeds the homeless in Valdosta every day.
“I’m so grateful to have the support of so many people,” Guyton said. “It lets me know that my efforts are going to the right place and helping the right people.”
Also helping with the event were members of Lowndes Drug and Action Council, headed by Executive Director David Troy.
“We had an excellent turnout today,” Troy said. “I really commend Mrs. Guyton for her efforts and we look forward to continuing to assist her.”
In 2009, Guyton created Love In Action With Compassion, Inc., a non-profit organization with the mission of providing constructive activities for the children of the Hudson Dockett community, as well as providing basic necessities for the citizens of Lowndes and Thomas counties.
