Post 13 celebrates American Legion birthday

- American Legion Post 13 hosts an open house festival and fundraiser this weekend.
This month, the American Legion has its 95th birthday and the local post invites the public to celebrate this anniversary.
American Legion Post 13 hosts an open house festival and fundraiser this weekend. The barbecue fundraiser and open house will be held 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and noon-3 p.m., Sunday, March 8, 9, at the post home, 1301 Williams St. Hamburgers/cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks will be sold. The post lounge will be open Saturday.
The Post 13 home is one of the few structures that was built originally as an American Legion Post and was dedicated on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 1931. The building was designed by famed Valdosta architect Lloyd Greer nearly 83 years ago and was built by World War I veterans in a short period of time.
As the nation’s largest veterans organization, the American Legion has led the way in supporting veterans and their families since 1919. Membership in the American Legion is open to all combat-era veterans.
Sons of the American Legion is open to the sons and grandsons of those who served during combat eras and the Ladies Auxiliary consists of wives, sisters, mothers, etc., of those who served during combat eras.
All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to support local veterans programs.
