March 16, 1940 – June 6, 2014

 

Thomas Melvin Driggers, age 74 of Waldo, Fla. passed away Friday, June 6, 2014. He was born March 16, 1940 in Old Town, Fla. to Allen Mathews and Laura Lancaster Driggers.

Melvin proudly served his country as a US Navy Seabee. He loved fishing and the outdoors. He enjoyed reading, especially his Bible.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Hunt Driggers; sons, Alan Michael and Michael Alan Driggers.

He is survived by his daughter, Ollie Gregory.

A Graveside Service will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Maypop Cemetery, Branford, Fla. with Pastor R. J. York officiating.

Tommy David Lyon Phillips

 

April 11, 1940 – June 6, 2014

 

Tommy David Lyon Phillips, 74, of Mayo, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2014.  Tommy was born April 11, 1940 in Nellsville, WI, to David and Virdine (Oman) Phillips.  

Mr. Phillips was of the Baptist Faith and was a member of Bethel Creek Baptist Church in Mayo.  He was a veteran of the United States Navy and Merchant Marines.  Mr. Phillips enjoyed gardening, and loved to spend time in the outdoors camping and fishing. 

Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents David Lyon and Virdine Isabelle Phillips-Oman and his loving wife Mrs. Bonnie Phillips. 

He is survived by his daughter Debbie Lynne Portbury of Mayo; his sons Michael Portbury of Mayo and Timothy Portbury of Connecticut; his brother Chuck Phillips of N. Carolina and sisters, Maryette Phillips of N.Carolina,  Marlea Mehmer of Colorado; his Aunt Ruby Kuhn of Wisconsin, as well as fourteen grandchildren and twentyseven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive him.

Funeral Services were held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Bethel Creek Baptist Church in Mayo with Pastor Shawn Johnson officiating.  Interment followed in Bethel Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family  received friends from 3 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, 2014 at Bethel Creek Baptist Church. All arrangements are under the care of Joe P. Burns Funeral Home.

Wynona Jean McGuire

Wynona Jean McGuire, 84, of Bostwick, passed away Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following an extended illness.

She was born in Bluefield, WV, and coming from Mayo, had been a resident of Putnam County for the past 49 years, first living in Palatka and later in Bostwick. She had worked at the Lui M. Sewing Factory in St. Augustine for 14 years and had retired as a supervisor at the Lion Pool Products in Palatka in 1992. She was a member of St. John’s Baptist Church in Bostwick. Jean enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, camping, sewing and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by the father of her children, Bob Britton McGuire; her parents, Leslie and Euna Walker; a brother, Hubert Walker; two sisters, Virginia Baker and Larue Little and two grandsons, J. P. Tinsley, Jr. and Jonathan.

Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-law, Bob and Rhonda McGuire of Palatka and Steven McGuire (Patty McDaniels) of Bostwick; two daughters and sons-in-law, Libby and Steve Adams of Palatka and Debbie and John Tinsley of Bostwick; a sister, Leda White of Starke; fifteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Pastor Leon Edenfield officiating. In honor and celebration of Jean’s life a Video Tribute was shown. Committal services followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Mayo at 3 p.m with Elder Leslie Folsom officiating.
