Data released by Bloomberg Rankings named Valdosta as the fastest-shrinking city in the United States.
Last week, Bloomberg.com released a chart from the Bloomberg Rankings team that showed an estimated population drop in Valdosta from 57,706 in 2012 to 56,481 in 2013, a loss of 1,225 people. Bloomberg stated that the 2.12 percent drop made Valdosta the country’s fastest-shrinking city.
Bloomberg’s data appears to be taken from estimates from the United States Census Bureau, but the rankings do not identify the source.
The Census Bureau estimated that Valdosta’s population grew 5.4 percent from 2010 to 2012 but then declined in 2013.
Census Bureau documentation states that the estimates are based on data from several sources including birth and death records, information from the Internal Revenue Service, enrollment numbers from Medicare and Medicaid and personnel numbers from the Armed Services, according to the Census Bureau.
Valdosta is one of three Georgia cities listed. Albany and Macon are also on the Bloomberg Rankings. The list also includes major American cities, such as Detroit.
