A Georgia State Patrol officer removes debris from the scene of an accident along Highway 376 about one and a half miles west of Lake Park.

One person was injured in a Wednesday morning wreck in Lake Park after the drive shaft from a logging truck fell out from under the vehicle and onto the road, authorities reported.

At 9:25 a.m., Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to a two-vehicle accident on Lakes Boulevard just over half a mile west of Loch Laurel Road, according to TFC Clay Cothron.

“A log truck was travelling westbound on Highway 376 when it had a mechanical malfunction,” said Cothron. “The drive shaft fell out and leaked transmission fluid on the roadway.”

The driver of a car travelling westbound behind the truck struck the drive shaft in the road, lost control of the vehicle, overturned and came to a rest in a small pond north of the road, said Cothron.

“The car came to rest on its tires,” said Cothron. “The vehicle was submerged, and water came up to the steering wheel.”

The male driver of the truck did not suffer any injuries. The female driver of the car was transported to South Georgia Medical Center for treatment, but did not suffer major injuries, said Cothron.

Georgia’s Motor Carrier Compliance Division is inspecting the logging truck and investigating the incident to determine what charges, if any, will be filed, said Cothron.
