QUITMAN — Lowndes Associated Ministries to People raised several thousands of dollars Saturday during its first-ever clay shooting benefit.
Several teams participated in the LAMP Sporting Clay Tournament at Southwind Sporting Clays and Quail Hunting on U.S. 84 in Quitman.
“I believe we had 28 teams compete, which I’ve been told is very good for a first-time event,” said Sam McCord with LAMP.
Teams started gathering for breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m., and the first round of teams started shooting at 8 a.m. The teams rotated through several stations at the Southwind complex which provided shooters with a variety of target types.
“This is our first clay shooting event, and it’s something a little different,” said McCord. “It’s not only a fundraiser but a friendraiser. It’s put me in contact with people I haven’t had the opportunity to meet in the past through our regular campaign drives.”
The tournament raised between $10,000 and $13,000, said McCord, who added LAMP will use the funds to provide services to its clients.
LAMP provides shelter for homeless families, single parents and single women along with empowerment classes like money management, job interviewing skills and GED classes. In 2013, LAMP housed 327 individuals, served 50,525 meals, and assisted more than 398 homeless individuals with services through the Day Center, said McCord.
