Angus P. “Buddy” Nott 

Dec. 2, 1918 – July 23, 2014 

Angus P. “Buddy” Nott, age 95, of Live Oak, Fla. passed away, July 23, 2014 at his home following a brief illness.  Buddy was born on Dec. 2, 1918, in Trilby, Fla., the son of Leslie E. Nott, Sr., and Willie Holton Nott. He attended school there and graduated from Pasco High School in Dade City in 1935. He was a banker and his career in banking spanned 52 years beginning in St. Petersburg as a messenger at the Union Trust Company. He moved to the First National Bank of Clearwater and then to Live Oak in 1949. He was an officer at the First National Bank (now Bank of America) and in 1968 affiliated with First Commercial Bank (now TD Bank) where he served as President and Chairman of the Board. He served a term on the Board of Directors of the Florida Bankers Association and retired in 1986. He was one of the organizers of CNB Bank and served on the Board of Directors for several years. In 1994 he accepted a volunteer assignment from a government agency to go to Poland and assist in the restructuring of the rural banks after the failure of communism.  

Buddy was a World War II veteran. His army unit was sent to support the First Marines in the first land offensive of the war against the Japanese on Guadalcanal. He earned a Bronze Star, a Combat Infantryman Badge and a Presidential Unit Citation. He was transferred to the Air Force and earned his aerial gunner wings flying on B-29 bombers.  Discharge in October 1945, he returned to his job at the bank in Clearwater.

After retiring Buddy ran for and was elected mayor and served 16 years without further opposition. He loved to travel and once flew around the world in 48 hours marking the 50th anniversary of Pan American Airlines. He also visited all 50 states as well as several European countries.

Active in local affairs, he was a Mason for more than 65 years, an Elk for more than 50 years, served 13 years as chairman of the Suwannee County Development Authority and vice chairman of the Tourist Development Committee.  He also was active in the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycees, and Shrine Club and served a term on the State ASCS Committee. He served as a lay reader at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and served several terms as a vestryman.

He is survived by his wife Linda, two daughters, Carolyn (Grafton) Purdy, Live Oak; Marianne Fullarton, Summerfield, Fla.; one son, Robert (Tammy) Nott, Crystal River, Fla.; two step-daughters, Kathy (Ernesto) Gonzalez and Erin (Ken) Cash; six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Services will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church with Father Don Woodrum officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal youth fund, P.O. Box 1238, Live Oak, Fla. 32064.

James Everett Mayfield 

July 15, 1942 – July 24, 2014 

James Everett Mayfield, age 72, of Branford, Fla. passed away early Thursday morning, July 24, 2014 at his home.  He was born in Jackson, TN. moving to Branford in 2002 from Massachusetts. Everett worked in construction as a pipe fitter and was a construction superintendent. He loved to fish and travel and was a member of the Advent Christian Church in Beachville, Fla. 

He was predeceased by his parents, Leonard and Fern Mayfield and a grandson, Jed Kent.

He is survived by his wife, Gaynell Mayfield, Branford, Fla.; one son, James Samuel Kent, II, Branford, Fla.; one brother, W. Harold Mayfield, Jackson, TN. 

Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Beachville Advent Christian Church.

Funeral services will be held, 11 a.m., Monday, July 28, 2014 in the Beachville Advent Christian Church with Pastor Bruce Arnold officiating. Internment will follow in the Maypop Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the family, 403 SW Owen Avenue, Branford, Fla. 32008.

James Ellis Baxter, Jr.“Pete” 

Dec. 8, 1946 – July 21, 2014 

James “Pete” Ellis Baxter, Jr., age 67, of Live Oak, Fla. passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2014 at the V.A. Medical Center in Gainesville, Fla. following a brief illness.  He was a native and life long resident of Suwannee County where he worked for many years as a Mechanic.  Pete was a previous owner of the Amoco Service Station in downtown Live Oak and a very gifted mechanic. Pete was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Viet Nam Era.  He was a big-time fisherman and lived for his grandchildren.

He is survived by one son, Jimmy (Honorine) Baxter, Orlando, Fla.; one daughter, Kay (Tony) Selph, Virginia Beach, VA; two brothers, Lester Baxter and Kenneth Dutton both of Live Oak; two grandchildren, Kelly Selph and Chy Selph both of Virginia Beach, VA.

Visitation was held Wednesday, July 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside services were held, 10 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014 in the Orange Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Henry Smart officiating.
