- Jet McCoy has appeared for three seasons on ‘The Amazing Race’ but has not allowed reality TV to change the essence of his life.
VALDOSTA — Jet McCoy’s life hasn’t changed much since he and brother Cord have appeared three times as the “cowboys” on the popular reality TV show “The Amazing Race.”
By the time he spoke Tuesday morning with The Times, McCoy had already shoed a couple of horses and was preparing to care for his herd of cattle.
Yet, there have been some changes. Such as doing media interviews and traveling to speaking engagements such as the one scheduled this weekend for Valdosta. Otherwise, “The Amazing Race” may have taken him around the world three times, but he remains a down-to-earth Oklahoma cowboy at heart.
“Most cows don’t care if you’ve been on TV or not,” McCoy said.
Many people, however, do.
The McCoys have been one of the most popular teams on one of the most popular reality TV shows on the air. Jet and Cord McCoy have competed three times on “The Amazing Race,” a record that may only be tied by a pair of Harlem Globetrotters who have also raced around the world.
Since gaining popularity on the show, Jet McCoy said he’s been asked to emcee fundraisers and benefits and speak to churches about his lifelong Christian faith.
He also does not forget people who have been a part of his life.
Such is the case with Bryan Jarvis, minister of Valdosta’s Central Avenue Church of Christ. Several years ago, when the McCoys attended college, Jarvis was a youth minister in Weatherford, Okla. In addition to football and baseball teams, Weatherford had a bull-riding team, which included the McCoys.
Years later, while his wife, Shauna, watched “The Amazing Race,” she called to Jarvis. There, on TV, Jet and Cord McCoy were racing other contestants around the world for a million dollars.
Discovering the brothers regularly speak at churches and organizations, Jarvis invited Jet to visit Valdosta.
“They were like the guys you see on TV,” Jarvis said. “They were good guys, solid guys.”
The youngest brothers of a family of older siblings, Jet and Cord have always been close. Jet is 13 months older than Cord. “We’re Irish twins,” Jet said.
They have always been close but they have also always competed with one another especially on the rodeo circuit. On “The Amazing Race,” the McCoys worked together.
Each season’s race lasts about 30 days total.
“On the second series, we traveled about 40,000 miles in 30 days,” he said.
During these races, the team partners spend almost all of their time together. While they work well together, Jet said he and Cord split for several weeks without seeing one another upon their returns from “Amazing Race” journeys.
No complaints though.
“It’s fun,” Jet said. “How many chances do you get to travel around the world?”
No word, yet, if the brothers will be invited back for a fourth season.
Prior to their first season, Jet said he felt well-traveled. Though he lives only 15 miles from his childhood home, he’d visited 45 of the 50 states and spent time in Canada.
Coast-to-coast travel did not prepare him for all of the sites he would see on “The Amazing Race,” but his upbringing did. The McCoys treated the people they met and their competitors with respect. They kept their wits and their values intact.
Even after three times on national television, Jet McCoy said he lives his life as he always has.
After his Valdosta visit, he will travel to Canada where he will compete in a rodeo.
