MOULTRIE — After a 3-2 victory in Game 1 of its Region 1-AAAAAA championship series doubleheader against Colquitt County on Tuesday at Packer Park, the Lowndes High softball team was not about to let up.

The Vikettes won the second game 13-1 in four innings to claim another region title and head into the state playoffs as a No. 1 seed.

The Lowndes girls will play host to the No. 4 team from Region 2 in a first-round series scheduled to begin on Oct. 15. The Vikettes raised their overall record to 19-8.

“These kids are awesome,” Lowndes coach Stewart Thomas said in a phone interview after the region championship series win. “One of the goals

we set was to repeat, but it’s just one of the goals. And that’s something we’ve talked about is that it’s just one of the steps on the ladder.

“Our ultimate goal is to get to Columbus and give ourselves a chance at a state championship.”

The Packers also will play host to a first-round series against the No. 3 team from Region 2 beginning Oct. 15. Colquitt will take a 15-15 overall record into the postseason.

The Colquitt girls were 7-1 in the region in the regular season and took a six-game winning streak into the doubleheader. One of those victories was an 8-7, nine-inning win against the Vikettes on Sept. 25.

But the Packers managed just five hits in the first-game loss and six more in the second game, when their only run came on a homer to lead off the game by Amber Kling.

But Becca Prairie duplicated that by hitting home run to lead off the bottom of the first and a wild pitch later in the inning gave the Vikettes all the margin they needed.

“They came out swinging it, getting that leadoff home run,” Thomas said. “To answer it and to answer with two and go on top, it was huge. I’ve been in that situation before and it’s demoralizing to feel like you’re getting momentum and then have it taken right away.”

Lowndes added three more in the second inning when it chased Colquitt County starter Nikki Johnson.

Freshman Bailey Howard pitched the third and fourth innings and gave up eight runs. The Packers made several errors behind her and Lowndes converted them into runs.

Haley Fowler pitched all 11 inning for Lowndes, giving up just three runs. She also grounded out in the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game to drive in the Vikettes 13th run and put the mercy rule in order.

After getting eight hits in seven innings in the first game, the Vikettes pounded out 13 in less than four innings in the second, including three each by Prairie and Jada McGillberry. Kyra Irvin and Haley Griffin each had two hits in the second game.

Irvin beat out a bouncer to short to score Katie Fletcher with the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning and Fowler held Colquitt County scoreless over its final two at bats in the Vikettes first-game victory.

Colquitt County, the No. 1 seed following the regular season, scored first in the bottom of the first on a single by Christin Hunnicutt and a double by Cheyenne Tillman.

But the Vikettes took the lead in the top of the fourth. The first run scored on a wild pitch and Prairie followed with a single to drive in Emilee Morris for the 2-1 lead.

Kling’s two-out double scored Chazmin Singletary in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game 2-2.

Makya Boone singled to left off Johnson to open the top of the sixth and Fletcher went in to run for her.

Morris walked and McGillberry sacrificed both runners up a base. After Prairie lined out, Irvin hustled down the line and just beat the throw from Kling at shortstop, giving the Vikettes the lead.

Fowler gave up base hits in the bottom of both the sixth and seventh innings, but kept the Packers off the board.

“The first one was tough,” Thomas said. “Not that the second one wasn’t, but we knew the first game would be a war and that winning it would be huge for us. That turned out to be the case.

“And we played well. We really played well.”

Fowler gave up six hits and no walks. She struck out four.

Johnson gave up eight hits for Colquitt County. She walked five and fanned three.

Prairie had five hits in the two games for the Vikettes and drove in six runs.
