VALDOSTA — If Tom Sawyer could make whitewashing the fence seem fun, Lowndes High School Off-Broadway will remind audiences of the fun throughout Mark Twain’s beloved story.

The students perform the Broadway musical “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” this weekend. Ken Ludwig and Don Schlitz bring music to the story of Tom, Huckleberry Finn, Injun Joe, Aunt Polly and Becky.

LHS Off-Broadway brings the Twain musical to life.

Director Phyllis Childree has rehearsed an abbreviated version of the show.

Initially, this would have been the show presented during the annual regional one-act play competition.

Since the competition occurs the same days as the Lowndes County School System’s fall break, LHS Off-Broadway will not compete this year, Childree said.

Still, LHS Off-Broadway has spared nothing for this show.

More than 40 students participate in the production. The dinner-theatre fundraiser for Saturday has already sold out; tickets are still available for the Sunday show.

The student theatre program raised $2,000 to rent the 1840s-era costumes for this show.

LHS Off-Broadway will also perform this show Friday morning for visiting Lake Park Elementary School students.

Meanwhile, the theatre program is already rehearsing for the annual student-created and led song-and-dance revue “5, 6, 7, 8,” scheduled for a two weekend run Nov. 8, 9, 15, 16.
