VALDOSTA — After a season full of picking off passes, Valdosta High’s Josh Norwood now got his hands on some individual region hardware.
With the release of the coaches’ all-Region 1-AAAAAA team, Norwood was named the league’s co-Defensive Player of the Year with Colquitt County’s star linebacker Bull Barge.
It’s an honor that came after Norwood made six interceptions on the season, leading the Wildcats’ stingy defense. It also led a contingent of six Wildcats named to the all-region first team with Valdosta securing four more spots on the region’s second team and eight players recognized on the honorable mention. Lowndes had two first-team selections, three second-team picks and two honorable mentions.
While Norwood was Valdosta’s lone individual award winner, Barge was joined by a slew of Packers as Colquitt was rewarded for its unbeaten run through the region and No. 1 ranking in the state. Coach Rush Propst was named the region’s Coach of the Year and senior running back Sihiem King earned the Region Player of the Year status. Colquitt kicker Luis Martinez was named the region’s Special Teams Player of the Year. Tift County received two individual accolades in Tajhea Chambers, the region’s Offensive Player of the Year, and Malik Henry, the Athlete of the Year. Camden County’s Antonio Wimbush was the region’s Utility Player of the Year.
In finishing 9-2 and second in the region, Valdosta was paced by its defense and that was recognized on the all-region team as well. In addition to Norwood, who is committed to Ohio State, the VHS defense had four players named to the all-region first team in defensive lineman Julian Fraser, linebackers Todd Bradley and Terrell Roundtree and defensive back Tre Barrett. Bradley is a junior while the other three are seniors.
The Wildcats also placed senior linebacker John Eager and sophomore defensive back Antwon Kincade on the second team and senior defensive lineman Donte Dixon and senior defensive backs Rashay March and Detravion Durden on the honorable mention.
Offensively, Valdosta put two players on the first team in sophomore tight end Khalil McClain and senior wide receiver Ricco Ramsey. McClain hauled in 31 passes for 400 yards and three touchdowns, while Ramsey led the Wildcats with 47 receptions for 488 yards and three touchdowns. Senior offensive lineman Ryan Carter was a second team choice.
Honorable mention selections off the VHS offense included both quarterbacks in junior Seth Shuman and senior Cole Massingill. Shuman completed 67 of 144 passes for 825 yards and eight touchdowns, while Massingill completed 82 of 125 passes for 794 yards and four touchdowns in a timeshare in the Wildcat backfield. Also splitting time but still being recognized were senior running back Tim McClain and junior running back Tim Griffin. McClain led VHS with 353 yards and six scores on 84 carries, while Griffin added 242 yards and two TDs on 57 carries. Junior lineman Davis McCraine was an honorable mention choice.
Brennan Goodson, who handled both kicking and punting duties for the ’Cats, was honored for both as the senior was named the first-team kicker and the second-team punter. Goodson hit 11 field goals, including the game-winner against rival Lowndes in the Winnersville Classic, while also averaging 36.3 yards per punt.
Lowndes, which missed the postseason for the first time since 2006, placed senior linebacker Brian Bell and junior running back Dezmon Copeland named to the first team. Bell, who is committed to Florida State, had 67 tackles to pace the Vikings. Copeland, meanwhile, led Lowndes with 915 yards rushing on 138 carries with nine touchdowns, including 204 yards and two scores against Tift County in Lowndes’ season finale.
The Vikings, who finished 6-4, also had senior linebacker Nate Brantley and senior defensive lineman Corveon White named to the second team after Brantley made 64 tackles and White had 14.5 sacks and 22.5 tackles for a loss. Lowndes’ other second-team selection was senior offensive lineman Bryan Roe.
Senior offensive lineman Dwayne Hart and senior kicker Nick Hart were honorable mention choices.
