Louis Maude Brown
Sept. 21, 1931 – April 9, 2015
Louis Maude Brown, 83, passed away April 9, 2015, at Lakeland Regional Health Center, unable to recover from a hip fracture.
She was born in Live Oak, Fla. Sept. 21, 1931 to Louis Jeptha and Moseley Hardee Day. While pursuing a teaching degree at the newly coed Florida State University she met the love of her life on visits back home to Live Oak. She eventually married V. B. “Sonny” Brown, and they had 62 good years together! She always kept close a sense of “little girl wonder,” from growing up years on Pine Street, then later at Suwannee Springs, always close to her loving parents; of course also “Gang and Mother” (grandparents Gov. Cary and Maude Hardee). This was uniquely balanced as an adult by a fierce sense of pride in family, and determination as a mother. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She is now Home, with Jesus, Papa Sonny Brown, and all the rest.
She is preceded in death by husband Sonny, her parents, sister Virginia Green, brother Cary Day. She is survived by sons Jep (Marisol), Michael (Karin), and Greg; daughter Barbara Ann; grandchildren Brian Brown, Jenni Roberts (Mike), Rachel Magnoni (Kirk), Rebecca Brown (Alex), Michael Campagnone, Megan Brown, Matthew Brown, Gregory Brown, and Spencer Brown; great-grandchildren Kade Maulden, Gracie Roberts, Santino “Sonny” Magnoni, and Jonah Magnoni.
Extra special mention and thanks to niece Moseley Ruark and husband Ray for their love and support through the years, and also to her companion ad caregiver, Miriam Valderrama, who brought many more smiles to her face than anyone. Much appreciation to Ivoree, Pat, Bernice, Marion Voncile, Lawanna, Ednell, Bully, Bruce and all the rest for visiting her and pushing her to remain active these recent years.
Visitation will be Saturday, April 18, 2015, from noon to 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church on West Howard Street in Live Oak, Fla. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m., with Steve Sweitzer and Rev. Ray Ruark officiating. In lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to a new idea for an old beautiful town. We are establishing the VB and Louis Brown Memorial Trust Fund for city of Live Oak beautification e.g. Cemetery up keep/update, Heritage Park and related endeavors. This fund will be set up at First Federal Bank of Florida.

He is survived by his wife Barbara Herberg Roy, Naples, Fla.; two daughters, Jan (Jim) Cummings, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Lynne Roy, Live Oak, Fla.; one son, William Glenn Roy Jr., Altamonte Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren Kasey (DR) Cummings Repass, Jacksonville, Fla.; Mindy Cummings Nowakowski, Big Sky, Mont.; William G. Roy III, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; Christopher Andrew (Jamie) Roy, Longwood, Fla.; five great-grandchildren, James Lee Repass, Robinson Mackay Repass, Ryleigh Cummings Repass; Hunter Joseph Nowakowski; and Tucker James Nowakowski and Camden James Roy. Bill Roy grew up in Lake City, Florida. At the age of 19, he joined the Navy. Roy served his country in World War II as a Navy Photographer on the carrier, the USS Yorktown, from which he filmed the battle of Midway. After the Yorktown was bombed by Japanese bombers and was listing to its side, the ship was abandoned. Roy and others volunteered to return to the Yorktown to try to salvage it. Once again, the Yorktown was attacked by torpedos and it finally sunk. As a decorated veteran, he continued in the Naval Reserve for 20 years reaching the rank of Lt. Commander.
After the war, he returned to Lake City and began his career as a professional photographer, setting up the Bill Roy Studio. He also served as a city commissioner. At this time, he was married to Ruth Lambert Roy. In 1952, he moved the family to Baltimore, Md., to be a film director for the Martin Company, filming test flights of the unmanned missile, the Matador. During this time, he studied to become a lawyer.
In 1960, Roy moved the family to Satellite Beach and was a contracts manager for the Gemini, Titan III, and Saturn-Apollo moon programs at Kennedy Space Center during the height of the space programs during the 1960s. Later, he was a corporate attorney for Dow Chemical in Washington, D.C. and Dow’s home office in Midland, Mich.
Our father was well-known for two of his favorite sayings. When he would call you, regardless of the time of day, he would always ask, “So what have you accomplished today?” When you were with him, the first thing in the morning he would want to know was what we were going to do that day. He just felt that life was one big adventure and was ready to explore at home or abroad.
Bill will be remembered as an avid conversationalist, world traveler, and humanitarian. Bill and his wife Barbara traveled around the world more than 14 times, visiting over 100 countries, making friends, and helping those in need. He was a great ambassador for our country. Bill spent a week in Havana, Cuba, in December, celebrating his 95th birthday.
There will be a memorial service at the Naples United Church of Christ in Naples, Fla. Interment will be in Lake City, Fla., with a graveside service for family and friends on April 20, 2015 at 4 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. (two hours prior to the graveside services) at the funeral home.
