Wyatt Jackson of the District 2-5A championship baseball team, who helped propel the Suwannee Bulldogs to the Class 5A Regional Quarterfinals, was named to the 2015 Florida Athletic Coaches Association All-Star Baseball Team. The games are this weekend, May 23-24, at Fireman’s Field in Sebring.
The event will feature four games over two days with a pro/college scout workout today, May 22. Game times are 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. May 23 and 24, and tickets are $10 per day. Many Major League Baseball and college rosters, both past and present, have participated in this event over its 37 year span. The FACA All-Star Classic is the top All-Star baseball game in the country, according to the FACA. Jackson was selected by coaches from the schools that represent our district, head SHS baseball coach Terry Mixon said. Seven schools represent our district in the association. “Only a senior can play in the All-Star games and only one or two players are selected to compete from each district based on the size of the district,” said Mixon. Jackson was the only one selected to play.
“It is quite an honor to get to play in the games,” said Mixon. “Jackson is really excited to get this opportunity and get to play against the best from around the state.”
Jackson will play in front of the pro draft. “Because of this, we expect a large turnout of pro scouts (over 70 in 2014), front office people and college coaches to watch Florida’s top high school baseball players perform,” said Shelton Crews, executive director of the FACA. “Over 30 players last year were drafted in the MLB draft.”
Jackson played in 74 games in his three-year career with SHS baseball with a fielding percentage of .909, 41 put outs and nine assists while earning only five errors. He hit the ball 89 times with 68 RBIs and four home runs. His batting average was .426.
