One man was critically injured after a semi truck ran the red light at the US 129 and 72nd Trace intersection on Friday, June 5, causing a three-vehicle wreck, according to a Live Oak Police Department report released Monday afternoon.

The wreck happened around 5 p.m. when semi truck driver Danny David Hunter, 50, of Holden Beach, N.C., reportedly took his eyes of the roadway while traveling north on US 129. When he looked back, the traffic signal had turned red, the LOPD report states.

In Hunter’s path were two vehicles lawfully making left turns, according to the report. One vehicle, a 2004 Lincoln LS driven by 43-year-old Michael L. Black of Live Oak, was traveling west and turning left onto US 129 South from 72nd Trace. The other vehicle, a 2003 Ford Taurus driven by 63-year-old George Mitchell Kirkland of Live Oak, was traveling east and turning left onto US 129 North from 72nd Trace.

The report states Hunter tried to take evasive action but was unable to avoid a collision with the Lincoln, striking its left side and redirecting it. The Lincoln then struck the right rear of the Ford, causing the Ford to rotate across the median.

The semi came to rest facing northwest in the intersection. The Lincoln came to rest in the left southbound lane of US 129, facing northwest. The Ford came to rest facing south in the left northbound lane of US 129.

According to the LOPD report, Black received critical injuries and was flown by Airlife 7 to Shands at UF Health in Gainesville. LOPD Chief Buddy Williams stated Black was still in critical condition but stable as of Monday, June 8.

Kirkland and his 25-year-old passenger, Brandy Marie Hill Kirkland of Live Oak, received minor injuries and were transported to Shands Regional Medical Center in Live Oak by Suwannee County EMS.

Hunter was uninjured and was charged with careless driving, according to Williams.

The LOPD reports all drivers and passengers were wearing seat belts.
