Landfill still smoldering following Tuesday fire

Suwannee County Fire Rescue on the scene of a landfill fire Tuesday.

Trash, rubble and brush at Suwannee Landfill LLC, a commercial dump site located off CR 795, near I-10, caught fire Tuesday night, June 9, according to Suwannee County Fire Rescue. SCFR responded to the site just north of 72nd Trace around 8:30 p.m. to find five acres aflame. According to SCFR, their crews and the Department of Forestry fought the blaze for five hours while local and state law enforcement were on hand to control traffic. The cause of the fire remains undetermined as of press time, according to Public Safety Director James Sommers.

The Florida Highway Patrol is continuing to monitor the smoldering site due to hazardous conditions such thick smoke, which Sommers expects to last for the next few days. FHP encourages motorists in the area to use low beam headlights, reduce speed and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
