SMYRNA, Ga. (AP) — A metro Atlanta police department is outfitting officers with body cameras months after a fatal officer-involved shooting.

Smyrna Police Department spokesman Chris Graeff says officers will begin wearing body cameras on Wednesday. Graeff says officers assigned to several divisions including patrol, street crimes, the D.U.I. task force and more will be assigned cameras.

Graeff says the cameras are meant to help collect evidence and the video and audio taken from them may be used in investigations into complaints against officers.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation recently concluded a probe into the March 25 shooting of 23-year-old Nicholas Thomas and handed its findings over to the Cobb County District Attorney. Graeff says the department was considering buying body cameras before the shooting.

Graeff says the 75 cameras cost the department $68,140.
