LAKE PARK — A Lowndes County domestic dispute turned into a high-speed chase Monday morning that ended outside of Madison, Fla.

The incident began when Lowndes County sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic dispute between a man and a woman in Lake Park. After deputies left the scene, the woman left for a place where she thought she would be safe, said Lowndes County Sheriff’s Lt. Stryde Jones.

“The deputy then issued an arrest warrant for battery for the man, and he shows up at the house trying to find her,” said Jones. “That’s when deputies pulled up behind him and the chase was on.”

Deputies were in the area when the woman called 911 and began pursuing the man who was driving a red Mustang. The man maintained a speed of more than 100 miles per hour throughout the chase, reaching up to 120 mph at one point.

Lowndes deputies followed the vehicle into Florida where they were joined by Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office deputies who followed the man through Jennings, Fla., and onto Florida State Road 6 going west toward Madison, Fla.

During the chase, the man allegedly maneuvered to strike Hamilton County deputies who were placing stop sticks on the road in an attempt to deflate his tires.

The pursuit came to an end outside of Madison just east of Northeast Cattail Drive after the driver ran over stop sticks that were deployed in the road.

“We were fortunate that we were able to get him to stop without hurting anyone,” said Hamilton County Sheriff J. Harrell Reid.

Christopher Jenkins, 23, of Valdosta was taken into custody and booked at the Hamilton County Jail. He faces charges of felony fleeing and attempting to elude, several traffic charges and two counts of aggravated assault, said Reid.

The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office has charged Jenkins with battery, traffic charges and felony fleeing and attempting to elude, said Jones. Jenkins will face those charges and possible additional charges when he is extradited to Lowndes County.
