Alice Martin Atkinson
Aug. 14, 2015
Alice Martin Atkinson died in Naples, Fl, on Aug. 14, 2015. Alice Evie Martin was the youngest of 7 children, and grew up near Anderson, S.C. She spent grades 1-8 in a 2-room schoolhouse, doing homework by the light of a kerosene lamp. A scholarship student at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C., she graduated cum laude in 1941, with majors in history and math.
In 1942, after a brief period of teaching school, she began work as a “computer” at the Army Ballistics Research Lab in Aberdeen, Md. There she was part of a team working around the clock making thousands of mathematical calculations to improve American weapons accuracy.
She married Thomas H. Atkinson in May, 1945. They were founding members of the Fort Myers Beach Methodist Church, and after moving to Estero in 1958, were equally supportive of the Methodist Church there.
Alice and Tom imbued their 6 children with deep respect for education, and also encouraged creative endeavors and practical skills. Alice started a 4-H club in Estero, which she led until 1973, when she moved to Branford, Fl. She also helped with PTA, Band Boosters, and other school activities.
In Branford she continued working with 4-H, and was active in the Women’s Club. She enjoyed substitute teaching. She won several “Best of Show” awards for her pickles and preserves, and led cooking and sewing classes as a volunteer with the Home and Community Educators Club.
Devoted to her family, she traveled at a moment’s notice to help when needed. Preceded in death by Thomas, she leaves 6 children, 8 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren, who loved her greatly and also appreciated her for the remarkable woman she was. Twin great-grandsons are expected in December.
