Sylvia Gail Smith Newsome, age 65, of Jasper, FL. passed away Friday, Aug. 21, 2015 at Haven Hospice Suwannee Valley Care Center in Lake City, FL. Gail was born in Jacksonville, FL. on Oct. 10, 1949 to the late John Timothy Smith, Sr. and Margarette Wetherington Smith.  Her father was in the construction business and work kept the family on the move for many years. When she was older the family finally settled back in Hamilton County where she married and started her own family.  When it was time for her to go to work to support her young family she proved herself more than capable. Many will remember her for the many years she spent as the managing editor at the Jasper News. In addition to being a skilled writer, Gail was an artist and enjoyed the time she was granted to sit with brush and easel and create beautiful paintings. Gail was also a talented seamstress and took in work from all over the county doing alterations for others. She donated her time and talent to the church for many years sewing costumes for the children’s choir and adult Easter and Christmas programs. She was a dedicated member at First Baptist Church in Jasper, FL. where she enjoyed singing in the church choir. She was a faithful daughter, sister, mother and grandmother.

Gail was not afraid to share her faith and it was that faithfulness that afforded her that special moment on Friday evening when she met Jesus face to face.

She is survived by two daughters, Amanda Newsome Parks and her husband David and Karen Newsome Leslie and her husband David all of Jennings, FL.; two brothers, John Timothy Smith, Jr. “Tim” and his wife Christy of Jennings, FL. and James Addie Smith “Jim” and his wife Terri of Jasper, FL.; three sisters, Ferrice Fry and her husband Albert, Martha Nell Baker and her husband Ted, and Mantha Young and her husband Rick, all of Jasper, FL.; six beautiful grandchildren that she loved and adored, Alexandria, Preston, Jackson, Pierce, Hailey and Robert. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A Celebration of Life was  held  on Monday, Aug. 24, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Jasper with Pastor Roger Hutto officiating with Pastor Jason Love assisting. Nephews Arnie McCall and Justin Young also participated in the service.
