A week after Colquitt County finished off its second straight undefeated Georgia High School Association Class 6A state championship, the Packers got to add a second title to their mantle: national champions.

High School Football America, a computer ranking that analyzes strength of schedule as well as results among eight criteria used to determine its rankings, finished with the Packers atop a close poll that included De La Salle (Concord, California) at No. 2, Katy (Texas) at No. 3, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada) at No. 4 and Centennial (Coronoa, California) at No. 5. Centennial was atop the rankings before falling to De La Salle for the state championship Saturday night.

The national championship is the first for Colquitt County and the first for a Georgia program since Valdosta in 1992.

The National Prep Poll’s final rankings were also released Sunday and had Katy atop the rankings and the national champ with Colquitt County at No. 2.

The Packers were also in the running for a national championship from the National High School Football’s HSFB100 — Colquitt was second in last week’s ranking behind Centennial but ahead of Katy, which was fourth also behind Allen (Texas) which lost to Westlake in its state championship game. Katy, though, leapfrogged the Packers in Monday’s final poll on the strength of its defense which posted 10 shutouts and allowed just 62 points in a 16-game schedule.

MaxPreps’ Xcellent 25 also had the Packers were second behind Centennial a week ago and one spot ahead of Katy but in its final rankings released Monday morning had jumped Katy to No. 1 with Colquitt remaining second.

Bishop Gorman topped the USAToday Super 25 final rankings released Monday, one spot ahead of the Packers, while De La Salle is the MaxPreps Freeman Computer rankings national champions, passing Centennial after winning the California title showdown. Colquitt finished 13th in the Freeman rankings. Bishop Gorman also was the top team in the NUC High School Top 25, one spot ahead of the Packers.

A year ago when the Packers won their second state title and first since 1994, they finished fourth in the HSFB100, fourth in the High School Football America computer poll, fourth in the National Prep Poll, fifth in the USAToday Super 25 and sixth in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25.
