Doyle Laverne Grantham

Feb. 17, 1935 – Dec. 18, 2015

Doyle Laverne Grantham, age 80, of Jasper, Fla. passed away early on Friday morning Dec. 18, 2015 at Haven Hospice following a brief illness.

Laverne was born in Suwannee County on Feb. 17, 1935 to the late Emery and Nellie Hurst Grantham. He served as Jasper’s Fire Chief from 1973-1994. Following his retirement he managed Grantham Trucking from 1995-2004. Laverne served in the Florida National Guard for 10 years and was also a member of the Sheriff’s Mounted Posse. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Irene Geiger Grantham; three sons, Jimmy, Gary and Kevin Grantham; one daughter, Vikkie Grantham; two brothers, Drew and John “Rufus” Grantham; eight grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church in Jasper, Fla. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery.

Gloria L. Hunter

Jan. 31, 1934 – Dec. 16, 2015

Gloria L. Hunter, age 81, of Jasper, Fla. passed away at her home Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015.

Gloria was a native and lifelong resident of Hamilton County. She was born on Jan. 31, 1934 to the late Henry Bordus Lewis and his wife Mamie Hayes Lewis. Gloria later married Clyde B. Hunter and began their new life together on the family farm. Together they worked on the farm with the help of their five daughters. Many remember Gloria from the many years she spent driving the school bus for the Hamilton County School System while others will remember her role in their life as Momma, “Ma-Ma”, loving wife, part- time farmer and sometimes drill sergeant. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was known to not only have an opinion but to share it.  There was much laughter in the Hunter home and memories of happy days are abundant. Gloria was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde B. Hunter, their twin sons, and her two brothers, William H. Lewis and Charles F. Lewis. Ms. Hunter was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in White Springs.

Survivors include daughters, Amelia Hunter Tompkins and her husband Jim, Jasper, Fla., Jan Hunter Harris, Live Oak, Fla., Cindy Hunter Goolsby and her husband Wayne, Jasper, Fla., Clyda Hunter Griner (Jerry), Jasper, Fla. and Gretchen Hunter Goolsby, Live Oak, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in White Springs. Interment followed at Prospect Primitive Baptist Church.

Marti Dellene Wiggins

July 16, 1975 – Dec. 20, 2015

Marti Dellene Wiggins, age 40, of Jasper, Fla., passed away Dec. 20, 2015, at Lake City Medical Center following a brief illness. Marti was the daughter of Milton and Shirley Smith Wiggins. She was born on July 16, 1975 in Tampa, Fla. where she lived most of her life. Marti never saw the world with her eyes or heard with her ears but she experienced the world just as any other child would. She had the love and support of her parents who were determined to provide a safe and secure home for her. She was enveloped in love by her whole family.

She attended LaVoy Exceptional Center in Tampa and received her certificate of completion for her many years of hard work. She was a happy young lady, who most definitely could be characterized as a “Daddy’s Girl”. She loved to just sit quietly holding Dad’s thumb and feel comforted by his willingness to share those special moments. Marti moved from Tampa to Jasper 13 years ago with her parents. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, paternal grandparents, Ruby and J.C. Wiggins and her maternal grandfather, Robert Smith. Marti attended Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her parents, Milton and Shirley; one brother, Dell Pittman of Tampa and one sister, Charlotte Pittman and her companion Tammy, also of Tampa; her maternal grandmother, Mildred Smith of Haines City, Fla.; numerous aunts and uncles.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 28, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Prueter officiating.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lighthouse Children’s Home, 7771 Mahan Drive, Tallahassee, FL. 32309.

Eunice Marvine Thacker Hayes Peters

June 28, 1925 – Dec. 20, 2015

Eunice Marvine Thacker Hayes Peters, 90, of Jasper, Fla., went to be with her Lord on Dec. 20, 2015.

Born on June 28, 1925, in Marietta, Ga., to the late William Carter Thacker and Willa Worley Thacker. She was a homemaker, ran Stan’s (Papa Stan’s) Bar-B-Que restaurant in Jasper for many years, worked at Lang’s in Jasper and Younkers in De Moines, Iowa. A member of First Baptist Church of Jasper.

She was known by her family, friends and other as Mama, Nana, Aunt Marvine, Mama Stan, Eunice, Mrs. Hayes or Mrs. Peters.  She goes by many names but she is just one beautiful lady who had a gentle soul and a big heart.  She always told her family “that if you could not say something nice, then don’t say anything at all.”

Preceded in death by her husband’s; the love of her life John Stanford Hayes, and her second chance at love Ward L Peters; daughter Barbara Ann Hayes and son John Stanley Hayes; four sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include her four daughters, Bobbie Barry (Steve), Lawrenceville, Ga.; Rita Robinson, Live Oak, Fla.; Gail Sloat (Bud), Quincy, Fla.. and Jane Stuessy (Rob), Sheridan, Wyoming; her daughter-in-law Barbara Hayes, Perry, Fla.; 12 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren; step-son, Dennis Peters (Kathy), Forest Lake, Minnesota; step-daughter, Bonnie Smith (Steve), Cedar Falls, Iowa; seven step-grandchildren and nine step-great grandchildren.

Funeral service to be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, at First Baptist Church in Jasper, Fla., with visitation at 1 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Jasper.
