Grantham was born in Suwannee County on Feb. 17, 1935, to the late Emery and Nellie Hurst Grantham.

Grantham was Jasper’s fire chief from 1973 until 1994. He served in the Florida National Guard for 10 years. He was also a member of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Posse.

Hamilton County Sheriff Harrell Reid knew Grantham for over 50 years.

“He was one of the people you could always depend on,” Sheriff Reid said. “He was kindhearted and was always willing to help people.”

Following his retirement, Grantham managed Grantham Trucking until 2004. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Grantham is survived by his wife of 52 years, Irene Geiger Grantham. They had three sons: Jimmy, Gary and Kevin Grantham and one daughter, Vikkie Grantham. He is also survived by two brothers: Drew and John “Rufus” Grantham; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Irene remembers her husband as a man who loved people. According to Irene, they could not go anywhere without him finding someone he knew to talk to. He was also the first one to offer help to anyone, she said.

Jasper Mayor Ann Lessman, Grantham’s niece, said her uncle will be fondly remembered.

“On behalf of the city of Jasper, we appreciate the service he gave to Jasper as fire chief from 1973 to 1994,” said Lessman. “In growing up with him as my uncle, I can remember him and Aunt Irene being dedicated employees of the city of Jasper. They loved their community and still do.”

Grantham’s funeral service was held Sunday, Dec. 20 at Calvary Baptist Church in Jasper with internment at Evergreen Cemetery.
