A look at what Suwannee County and state public officials make

Elected officials’ salaries are public record in Florida, and the state legislature releases an annual report detailing who makes what in Suwannee County and elsewhere in the state.

Sheriff Tony Cameron’s base salary is $114,334 per year, not including overtime, holiday pay or benefits. If he completes a certain number of continued education training courses outside of the mandatory 20 hours a year, he gets a $2,000 supplement to his salary.

The supervisor of elections, Glenda Williams, has her salary set at $87,538 per year.

The county tax collector, Sharon Jordan, has a base salary of $105,384.

Clerk of Circuit Court Barry Baker’s salary is $107,384.

Lamar Jenkins, the county property appraiser, makes $105,384, as does the school superintendent, Jerry Scarborough.

School board members make $27,892.

Vickie Music DePratter, finance director for Suwannee County Schools, supplied the following information:

The assistant superintendent for instruction makes $88,132 per year.

The assistant superintendent for administration makes $94,606 per year.

The school board’s chief financial officer has a yearly salary of $92,434.

The school board’s human resource director has a yearly salary of $85,647.

The director for elementary and early childhood education makes $85,647. The director of facilities, the director of transportation, the director of student services and the director of federal programs make the same.

The director of food service makes $69,829.

The director of information technology makes $79,365.

The principals of each school make the following: Suwannee Elementary, $80,690; Suwannee High, $78,690; RIVEROAK, $81,690; Suwannee Middle, $80,440; Suwannee Primary School, $74,690; Suwannee Intermediate School, $81,440; Branford Elementary, $80,690; Branford High, $79,690.

Suwannee County’s commissioners make $36,491 per year.

Ken Williams, finance director for the county, supplied salary information for county department heads.

Williams himself makes $73,965 per year.

Randy Harris, who is both the county administrator and the public works director, makes $126,506 per year.

Alvin Jackson is the director of economic development for both the city and county. His base salary is $92,331. The city reimburses the county for half of Jackson’s salary.

James Sommers, director of emergency medical services, makes $84,968 per year.

Betty Lawrence, library director, makes $87,131 per year.

Greg Scott, parks and recreation director for both the city and county, makes a base salary of $95,056, paid by the county.

Kathrine Allen directs the Suwannee branch of the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. The county pays 40 percent of her salary, with the rest coming from the University of Florida. The county’s share is $41,309.

Jimmy Prevatt, county attorney, is on an annual retainer for $17,500 for basic services. Most of his work is done and billed on an hourly basis, however, according to finance director Williams.

Ronald Meeks, director of planning and zoning, makes $55,099 per year.

Janet Parkhurst, finance director for the city of Live Oak, supplied salary information on city employees.

Parkhurst, who is also the interim city manager, makes $80,276 per year.

Police Chief Buddy Williams makes a base salary of $72,009, not including overtime, holiday pay and benefits.

Live Oak Fire Chief Chad Croft has a base salary of $80,161.

The city attorney, Erny Sellers, is a contract employee rather than a full-time one. His rate is $750 per month plus an hourly rate for special issues and work.

Individual city council members make $14,284 per year.

The mayor, Garth Nobles, makes $17,400 per year.

The city clerk, John Gill, makes $49,212 per year.

Roy Rogers, manager of the city’s building permit department, makes $74,276 per year.

George Curtis, who manages planning and zoning for the city, makes $65,000 per year.

Donna Hardin, town clerk for Branford, gave salary information on all Branford employees. Hardin make $549 per week.

Robbie Lee, the public works supervisor, makes $13.72 per hour.

The city council president makes $700 per month, while the vice council president makes $625 per month. Other council members make $550 per month.

There are only four other full-time employees for Branford.

Hansen Ward, who works in the public works department, makes $10.56 an hour.

Paul Van Asch, also in public works, makes $10 an hour.

Craig Timberlake, for Branford’s recreation department, makes $9 an hour.

Assistant clerk Tonya Byrd makes $11.09 an hour.
