VALDOSTA — Purported Ku Klux Klan flyers were distributed in various locations during the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

The flyers contain no contact information and there is no way to verify they actually came from the KKK organization itself.

The KKK recruitment flyers were discovered Monday in driveways and the roadways along the 400 block of Eager Drive and McKey Street, according to the Valdosta Police Department. Police have also received reports of similar flyers discovered on the eastside of town, Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said Tuesday.

The flyers’ language was not threatening and the selection of locations for placing the flyers are not deemed a threat, the police chief said.

The flyers attempted to recruit individuals to join the KKK. They are similar to flyers distributed in other states.

The flyer reportedly contained illustrations of King and a hooded KKK member. Flyers wished MLK a happy birthday, continuing, “We also have a dream.” The flyer claimed various groups represent various ethnicities and races and white people have the KKK.

The flyers do violate city ordinances regarding distribution of flyers, Childress said.

“We believe they were distributed by someone local,” Childress said.

With the flyers in driveways and on the streets, Childress said the person apparently distributed them quickly.

The Valdosta Police Department is testing the flyers for fingerprints. The VPD has also shared the flyers and information with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“I have looked at the flyers and I find their content offensive and the fact they were distributed on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday is nothing more than a cowardly way to insult a well-respected civil rights leader,” Childress said.
