- SHS used a Sam McMillan grand slam to defeat Baker County.
There was no resting for the Suwannee High School baseball team over spring break. The Bulldogs picked up two run-rule victories at home this week.
SHS defeated Deerfield Beach High School, 11-1, on Monday. The Bulldogs topped Fort White High School 10-0 on Tuesday.
Bo Bonds flirted with a no-hitter against Deerfield Beach. Bonds pitched 5 2/3 innings before allowing a hit. He struck out eight. He had two base hits at the plate and scored three runs.
“Bo pitched it great,” SHS coach Terry Mixon said. “We try to limit them to 70 pitches. He went a little over. I was going to let him go with a no-hitter. As soon as they got that base hit, that was enough.”
The Bulldogs used a six-run sixth inning to end the game by run-rule. They had three hits and four walks in the frame.
Michael Gregory pitched a three-hit shutout in a five-inning win over Fort White.
Catcher Sam McMillan lined a two-run homer in the third inning off starter Phillip Wooley. It was McMillan’s second home run of the regular season.
“It was 2-0, so I was looking for a fastball, middle-in part of the plate,” McMillan said.
Gregory was in charge on the mound. He kept the Indians hitters off-balance, striking out six.
“When you have a guy dominating on the mound, you want to give him run support,” McMillan said. “It was a really good job by Michael. He threw a lot of change-ups, kept the hitters off-balance, and got ahead in the count early.”
Jackson Greene went 2-for-3 against the Indians. Senior Cody Woods had two hits and scored two runs.
Hueston Morrill connected on his first home run of the season. His solo shot made it 9-0 in fifth inning. Bonds followed with a single and came home on a wild pitch to end the game, scoring the tenth run.
The Bulldogs improved to 11-7. They travel to Gainesville High School on Tuesday looking to tie the season series with the Hurricanes. GHS defeated the Bulldogs, 5-4, in the first game of the season.
