Wanee Festival 2016:

The Allman Brothers no longer play the Wanee Festival, but Gregg Allman, center, and others members of the band are scheduled to play in April.

LIVE OAK, Fla. — For more than a decade, the Allman Brothers made it an annual tradition to settle along the Suwannee River and jam with some friends and fellow musicians. And music fans from near and far came to watch, listen and dance.

Next month, the tradition continues — but without the Allman Brothers Band again — during the 12th Annual Wanee Festival at the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park.

Spirit of the Suwannee has hosted longer-running music festivals, such as the Suwannee SpringFest, the MagnoliaFest, the Suwannee River Jam, but the Wanee Festival has become the park’s most popular event, according to park officials.

The Wanee Festival regularly draws attendance from all 50 states and seven countries. They are drawn by such past performers as Robert Plant, Leon Russell, Widespread Panic, etc.

Widespread Panic headlines the festival again.

And almost always the Allman Brothers Band … until a couple of years ago.

The band called it quits a couple of years back. In 2008, the Wanee Festival went on but the Allman Brothers had to cancel its gig due to health issues.

The Allman Brothers Band has its roots in Jacksonville, Fla. Founded in 1969, the band featured Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Dickey Betts, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, “Jaimoe” Johanson. Songs include “Whipping Post,” “Ramblin’ Man,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Melissa,” “Midnight Rider,” etc.

After releasing the landmark live album “At Fillmore East,” Duane Allman died in a motorcycle accident. The band went through periods of break-ups and reunions but performed regularly for many years.

Quite a bit of the Allmans will remain in the Waneefest. Gregg Allman is one of the festival’s headliners.
