No injuries in school bus accident

VALDOSTA, Ga. — A Lowndes County public school bus was involved in a collision along North Valdosta Road in Valdosta on its way to school Tuesday morning, according to reports from the scene.  No student injuries were reported, according to a witness at the scene. A vehicle reportedly struck the rear of the school bus.  The bus was heading to Lowndes High School.

South Georgia fourth grader dines with governor

THOMASVILLE, Ga. — Railey Ramhofer, a fourth grader at Cross Creek Elementary School in Thomasville, had lunch with Gov. Nathan Deal on Thursday. The meal was a reward for winning second place in the 2016 Manufacturing Appreciation Week (MAW) student design contest in the kindergarten through fifth grade category. Ramhofer received a $300 scholarship check presented by Deal at the MAW awards luncheon held at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. “I feel really happy about winning,” Railey said at the luncheon. She explained that the polka dots incorporated in her design were the clever solution to an accidental marker mishap: “the marker exploded all over my paper, so I made them into polka dots,” she said.

 

Summers to speak at GSU Coaches Caravan

TIFTON, Ga. – Former Tift County Blue Devil player and assistant and current Georgia Southern head football coach will be at Spring Hill Country Club April 28 as part of the Georgia Southern University Coaches Caravan. Summers, along with assistant Larry Dixon, will be at the event, which starts at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but attendees need to RSVP. The Coaches Caravan will be a busy one during the week, with stops at Savannah and Jacksonville, Florida, in the days leading up to Tifton. Later stops will include Dublin, Columbus, Macon and Atlanta.

Georgia Military College breaks ground on new campus

EASTMAN, Ga. —Georgia Military College celebrated breaking ground on its newest campus Tuesday with a ceremony in Eastman. GMC-Eastman is the college’s 13th campus and is located in central Georgia’s Dodge County. Guest speakers at the ceremony included GMC President, Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV, former Ga. House Speaker Terry Coleman, District 13 state Sen. Greg Kirk and District 149 state Rep. Jimmy Pruett. GMC is the state’s second largest two-year college. Its main campus is in Milledgeville with other campuses in Augusta, Fairburn, Warner Robins, Valdosta and Columbus as well as extension centers in Dublin, Madison, Sandersville and Stone Mountain. Its enrollment includes more than 12,000 civilian students and additional 250 junior college cadets. Its prep school enrolls 500 students at the Milledgeville campus each year. 

 

Time for all the Huffabaloo

DALTON, Ga. — The second annual Huffabaloo, to raise funds for the restoration of the historic Huff House, is this Sunday from 12:30 to 6 p.m. The Huff House is an antebellum home with notable Civil War ties A new event at this year’s Huffabaloo is a tour of the Huff House where you can meet some of the people whose association with the house provides its historical significance.  Actors will portray Civil War Gens. Joseph Johnston and Patrick Cleburne. Mrs. Lida Huff and her three daughters will introduce themselves with information contributed by Tut McFarland, a relative of the Huffs. Marvin Sowder, a local Civil War aficionado, will share information about ongoing and completed renovations.  Another item that has been added this year is the Author’s Table, featuring local authors and those with ties to Dalton. Huffabaloo is designed to entertain families, providing a fun afternoon for all ages.  

 

Poet coming to ABAC

MOULTRIE, Ga. — The Moultrie-Colquitt County Library will host a program featuring poet Jeff Newberry at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30. His topic will be “The Poetry in Prose and the Prose in Poetry:  Reading and Writing in Multiple Genres.” The program is expected to be of interest to both readers and writers.Newberry is poet in residence at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he teaches in the writing and communication program. He is the author of the novel “A Stairway to the Sea,” the poetry collection “Brackish,” and the co-editor (with Brent House) of the poetry anthology The Gulf Stream: Poems of the Gulf Coast. The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Willcoxon Auditorium in the Moultrie Library, 204 Fifth St. S.E., Moultrie. Lafayette softball hosts Union

MAYO, Fla. — The Lafayette Lady Hornets softball team will face Union County Tuesday night with a trip to Vero Beach and the final four on the line.  First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
