DALTON, Ga. — A woman trying to help her family sell an old truck in north Georgia was attacked, stabbed and slashed by a man who answered an online advertisement for the vehicle, officials said, and authorities are looking for the white 2001 GMC Sonoma pickup and the man.

Mayra Espitia, 40, was stabbed at her residence in the south end of Whitfield County Tuesday during what was supposed to be an attempted auto sale, according to a press release from Sheriff Scott Chitwood.

Espitia was taken to Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton with wounds to her neck and elsewhere and she “immediately underwent surgery,” Chitwood said. Capt. Rick Swiney said the injuries “were very serious.”

According to the release, investigators determined the Espitia family was attempting to sell a pickup truck and had been advertising it for sale on craigslist.org. The man contacted them and advised he was interested and arrived at the Espitia residence around 1:30 p.m.

Espitia was at home alone at the time. The man was brought there by a white female in a dark-colored car. The female stayed in the car while the man went in the house and started speaking with Espitia about the truck. When she started to walk him out the door to look at the truck the man pulled a knife and started stabbing her.

The man then grabbed the keys. He got in the truck and left “at a high rate of speed,” Chitwood said. The female in the car also left.

The pickup truck did not have a tag. The man is described as a white male in his mid to late 40s.

“We’ve given the description out to all surrounding counties and we hope someone will run across that truck,” Swiney said.
