LIVE OAK — A fire that started at the C & D Landfill late Thursday night continued to burn through the day Friday.

Suwannee County Fire Rescue crews arrived around 11 p.m. Thursday night to the landfill to find roughly half an acre of debris on fire, according to James Sommers, public safety director with SCFR.

Crews worked alongside Florida Forestry Service through the night to try and contain the fire.

The owners of the property moved loads of dirt to the burning area Friday to try and smother the flames.

“It’s the second fire in a year out there,” Sommers said. “The EPA is involved at this point.”

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, said Sommers.
