MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Former NFL player and coach Earnest Byner will host a free, one-day Back to Basics football camp beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday for the second consecutive year at the Baldwin High School football stadium.

Byner is a Milledgeville native and graduated from Baldwin High School in 1980.

The camp is for ages 6 to 17 and Byner said that all athletes, not just football players, will benefit from attending.

The 14-year NFL veteran said that he had approximately 130 athletes come out last year, and that there is still space available for this year’s camp.

USA Football sponsors the free event and those wishing to attend can register online at www.usafootball.com.

Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m. the day of the camp and day-of registration is permitted, but it is preferred that athletes pre-register online.

Since the camp is no contact, there is no required equipment, but players are encouraged to wear cleats. It is also recommended that attendees bring a pair of tennis shoes in case the event is forced to move indoors due to inclement weather.

The camp is one of many USA Football clinics that will take place over the summer all across the country with each camp hosted by a player or former player from the host area.

“The benefit of attending the camp is really getting some sound, basic fundamentals for playing football and actually in any athletic endeavor it will transfer,” said Byner. “There’s stuff that they’ll be able to use from the day of the camp until they play their last football game.”

The camp will run until 1 p.m., and Chick-fil-A will provide lunch for those in attendance.

Byner added that there was a possibility they would hold a raffle to give away copies of his book “Everybody Fumbles” and signed mini-helmets.
