MOULTRIE, Ga. — After removing a jail inmate accused of threatening his attorney and using profanity in a Colquitt County courtroom, police charged him with a misdemeanor assault charge.

William Lee Poole was in the Justice Center Courtroom, located above the jail, for a bond hearing on Thursday when he got upset with defense attorney Hayden Willis, according to the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office. Willis was discussing Poole’s case with him at the time of the outburst.

Willis told police that Poole told him that the next time he sees him he would slap the (expletive) out of him. Five deputies were in the small courtroom, used frequently for bond hearings and other non-trial procedures.

Jail staff escorted Poole out of the courtroom when he began using vulgar language, sheriff’s reports said.

Police charged Poole, 34, 338-A Tommy Meredith Road, with simple assault.

Poole was arrested after a March traffic collision and charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, fleeing or attempting to elude law enforcement officer, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving on the wrong side of the roadway, driving with suspended license and possession of drug-related objects.

On March 18, police said, a drug agent tried to stop a Ford Expedition Poole was driving on North Main Street. Officers stopped pursuing the car after Poole turned right onto Veterans Parkway and a short time later cut through an exit and began driving south in the north-bound lanes.

The Expedition then went over an embankment and through the Home Depot parking lot, then crashed into another car when the SUV exited onto Highway 37 East.

Poole was knocked unconscious in the accident, police said. Officers recovered a bag thrown from the Expedition that contained suspected methamphetamine and a revolver that was tossed out in the building supply store’s parking lot.
