DALTON, Ga. — A North Georgia man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison as part of a plea deal reached on an original 16-count indictment that included child molestation and statutory rape charges.
Jody Lee Raby, 34, formerly of a Carbondale Road address in Dalton, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual exploitation of children on Tuesday before Superior Court Judge William Boyett. According to court records, Raby was sentenced to 12 years in prison with eight years on probation on the first count and 20 years of probation to be served on top of the eight years for the second count.
Raby must also pay fines totaling $4,000 and court costs as well as register as a sex offender. He will also be bound by a permanent protective order to stay away from the victims. As part of the plea deal, all of the remaining charges against Raby have been dropped.
Raby was arrested in April of last year after an investigation by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office. He and his girlfriend, Tina Louise Bedwell, were indicted later in 2015 on charges of computer and electronic child exploitation for images on their computer. Bedwell was also indicted for making a false statement when she told investigators she was unaware of the photos. Bedwell is still listed as a co-defendant.
Investigators were alerted in March 2015 that Raby was having a sexual relationship with a minor girl and had photographs and videos on his phone. Deputies took him into custody on April 20, confiscating the phone. There were photographs of other underage girls on his phone, officials said. A search of the home computer found other images, and investigators determined through interviews that Bedwell was aware of what was going on.
Raby has a past history with law enforcement, including arrests in July 2014 for aggravated assault and criminal trespass and in April 2014 on a battery charge.
