LIVE OAK — Suwannee Spotlight highlights outstanding local athletes. This week’s spotlight is on former SHS soccer player Jacob Segura.
Segura was named to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) All-Star team this year for his performance as a senior.
He will continue his soccer career at Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga.
Segura is helping his dad, SHS assistant soccer coach Freddy Segura, with a camp this summer at Suwannee High School for kids ages 6 to 12.
Summer camp and helping your dad coach has been?
JS: It’s been a great experience to see the potential the kids have. It’s helpful to start at a young age and get that vision of the game at an early age.
Under/over 10 goals for you freshman year of college?
Over. I feel confident about my game.
What’s one of the best moments you had from playing soccer at SHS?
JS: The district semifinal game my junior year against Wolfson. We won 3-2. I scored two goals and had the game-winner.
A player you model your game after?
JS: Andrés Iniesta. We play the same position (midfielder). The way he sees the field, his vision is incredible.
Name of a teammate you enjoyed playing with?
JS: Leonel Alvarez. We always played together as kids. We played on the same rec team. I remember one year it was just me and him with all new kids and we went to the championship.
Next year’s goals at Thomas University?
JS: I expect to play a lot and do well. I talked with the coach and there is a spot for me.
Every time you take the field you do what?
JS: I thank God for the opportunity. Other than that I don’t have a plan for each game. I just let it happen.
Ever scored on a free kick from midfield?
JS: Yes, twice during high school. The game-winning goal against Wolfson my junior year was a free kick from midfield.
