TIFTON, Ga. — Fans will get a chance to meet the 2016 Turner County Rebel football team July 23 when they host a media day at Alan Hobby Field.

Second year head coach Ben Simmons said the event will get started at 10 a.m. with team pictures. Players will also be available for photo opportunities as will coaches.

Simmons is ready for the season to begin. The Rebels have been busy this summer, which he said “has been going well.” Among their activities has been an organized team activity (OTA) at Tift County and they will be one of several teams participating in a two-day OTA at Cook starting next Tuesday. Tift County is also scheduled to go to Adel.

Two of his players that will be participating at the OTA are garnering a bit of attention. Rising seniors Ontario Wilson and Tamorrion Terry have caught the eye of college scouts. Both can play wide receiver. Wilson plays cornerback as well and Terry has been penciled in all over the field during his high school career.

The duo have not been the only contributors for Turner, who turned a 4-6 record in 2014 into 8-3 and a peak state rank of No. 5 in one media poll in 2015. That success is naturally expected to continue. Simmons believes he has the group to lead them. “A good group of seniors,” he said. “I’m excited about the program.”

As great as the summer has been for Turner, Simmons is extremely grateful for one aspect: dead week.

“One of the best things implemented,” he said. The mandated week of no activity is good for players and coaches, helping them recharge before gearing back up again.

The Georgia High School Association will allow conditioning drills to begin July 25 and practice in pads a week later.

Most schools will get their first taste of season action with scrimmages Aug. 12, but the Rebels will be able to get out a bit earlier. Simmons said that they did not participate in spring football. Because of that, the GHSA allows for a second scrimmage. Turner will host Cook the week of Aug. 5; the second scrimmage will be at Tift Aug. 12. The opportunity to go to Tift will be a good one, he said.

The regular season will also begin a bit earlier than most schools. Turner will play at Dougherty Aug. 18, a Thursday. As one of Albany’s four public high schools, Dougherty shares Hugh Mills Stadium with Albany, Monroe and Westover. The four juggle their home schedules, with games being played on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
