COHUTTA, Ga. — A routine traffic checkpoint in Cohutta Thursday night turned up something far from routine.

Cohutta Police Chief Ray Grossman says that toward the end of the checkpoint, which lasted from 9 to 11 p.m., officers made what it believed to be the largest-known seizure of suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms in Whitfield County history.

The checkpoint took place on Ga. Highway 71 (Cleveland Highway) at Wolfe Street inside Cohutta.

In a post on the department’s Facebook page, Grossman wrote that a Georgia Department of Public Safety Motor Carrier Compliance Division officer who was screening for commercial vehicles identified a passenger car driver who appeared to be under the influence.

The officer stopped the car and found the driver was DUI on drugs and one of his passengers had felony warrants out of Blue Ridge for synthetic narcotic possession and distribution.

A Murray County Sheriff’s Office canine also had an alert on the car, and a search of the vehicle found “an estimated 1.5 pounds total of suspected hallucinogenic mushrooms, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana and LSD,” Grossman wrote. Full analysis of all those items is pending by the State Crime Lab.

“Due to the nature of the items discovered, the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office narcotics unit assisted and according to their knowledge this is the largest known seizure of hallucinogenic mushrooms in county history from a single traffic stop,” wrote Grossman.

All told, the checkpoint resulted with six arrests.

Other agencies assisting on this checkpoint included the Georgia State Patrol, Cohutta Police Department, Varnell Police Department and the Georgia Department of Revenue.
