Local celebrities get ‘in sync’
VALDOSTA, Ga. — A group of Valdosta celebrities will bring their talents to the stage in a lip-sync battle for a cause Thursday evening. Each year, Leadership Lowndes welcomes a new class, which then breaks into smaller groups. The groups select a non-profit to benefit and coordinate an event with all proceeds going to the chosen organization. The lip-sync battle will benefit Girls on the Run. Girls on the Run allows third- through eighth-grade girls at participating schools to meet twice a week and play active games and run laps. Classroom time is held, allowing the girls to bond with each other while learning to encourage others, overcome peer pressure and help the local community. The program will kick off its season next week, said Council Director Claire Walton. Participating schools include Sallas Mahone Elementary, St. John School, Westside Elementary, Pinevale Elementary, Clyattville Elementary School, Lake Park Elementary and, as part of the new Heart and Sole program, Lowndes Middle. To raise money for the organization, 15 local celebrities will go head to head, lip-syncing selected songs. Awards will be given to each battle winner and one people’s choice award will be given. Competitors range from business owner and radio DJ Big Nick to Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress. The lip-sync battle is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, The Mill, 1337 Baytree Road. Tickets are $30 and are available at girlsontherunsouthgeorgia.org.

Price is right: Plan ahead to eat healthy
TIFTON, Ga. – It’s all part of the plan! When it comes to eating healthy and on a budget it really is a planning process. If you plan ahead before you go shopping you can eat all week on one shopping day. Make a list and stick to it. Know what you will be cooking for the week before you go to the store. Plan on using leftovers. Make a little extra when you cook and if you do not eat it right away, then freeze it for later. When you are buying in bulk, do not overstuff the refrigerator. This can cause you to forget what is in there and have foods go bad that you intended to eat. Also, meals are easier and quicker to prepare if you keep your pantry well-stocked. Have those spices ready to dress up any meal. Price is the Family and Consumer Sciences agent with UGA Extension in Tift County.
Dalton council still mulling over park proposal
DALTON, Ga. — After tabling a vote last week on the acquisition of land in downtown Dalton for the development of an estimated $6 to $6.5 million multi-purpose park near the Whitfield County Courthouse, the members of the Dalton City Council say they still need more time. Council members and Mayor Dennis Mock met in executive session for nearly two and a half hours on Tuesday without coming forth with a resolution to purchase several properties, essentially an entire city block, that would become a new downtown park of approximately three acres. And a meeting that had been talked about for Thursday for a possible vote on the park won’t happen now. “There was no ultimate resolution as to the park, so we won’t be having a vote on it anytime soon,” City Administrator Ty Ross said.
