Sweet thief: Little Debbies swiped

CHATSWORTH, Ga. — Perhaps it was just an extreme case of the late-night munchies, or maybe someone is ready to do a whole lot of holiday stocking stuffing.

Either way, the Chatsworth Police Department isn’t taking the theft of 32 cases of Little Debbie snack cakes last Friday as a joke.

“From theories that someone is stocking up in case there is a legalization of marijuana to a black market for snack cakes, we’ve heard everything on this,” Chief Josh Etheridge said. “It is funny to talk about and lighthearted for sure, but at the end of the day you are talking about a crime and a substantial loss for one of our local businesses. And the person or persons responsible for committing this crime will be facing serious charges when caught.”

According to an incident report, an unlocked delivery truck was too much temptation for the thief. The likely motivation? The truck was filled with three cases of Fudge Rounds, two cases of Pecan Pinwheels, four cases of Cherry Cordials, two cases of Fudge Strawberry Cakes, three cases of Oatmeal Creme Pies, four cases of Honey Buns, three cases of Cosmic Brownies, five cases of Nutty Bars, three cases of Swiss rolls and three cases of Donut Sticks. Also, two hand trucks valued at nearly $500 were stolen, obviously used to move the cases out of the truck.

In all, $563.77 worth of Little Debbies were stolen.

The truck is owned by Randall Stephenson Distribution in Chatsworth. Driver Ralph Hayes told police he normally locks his trailer up at night but had forgotten to do so the previous night. He said he noticed the items were missing when he arrived at the Ingles in Chatsworth on Friday morning to make a delivery.
