VALDOSTA — The city school board is looking to sell Valdosta High’s current building in anticipation of moving to the school’s new $83 million facility in 2018.

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Development Authority is negotiations with the Valdosta City School System to buy the building for an undisclosed amount; the building has been appraised for $3 million, School Superintendent Todd Cason said.

The VLDA is acting on behalf of an undisclosed buyer who wants to use the current VHS building — which was built in the 1970s — to house a medical school, Cason said.

VLDA Executive Director Andrea Schruijer would not disclose who the potential buyer is or what type of medical school would be created, due to confidentiality agreements involved in the sale, she said.

The board was scheduled to vote on the sale at its Dec. 13 meeting. However, after discussing the issue in executive session, the vote was tabled to allow attorneys from both parties more time to talk, Cason said.

The board is holding a special meeting at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, to further discuss the matter. The session will be information only, meaning no binding vote will be taken on the sale, according to the meeting’s agenda.

The meeting is open to the public and will take place at the Superintendent’s Office, 1204 Williams St.
